Research Summary

Dermatology Department of Kansai Medical University clinically specializes ultraviolet light (UV) therapy for various refractory inflammatory skin disorders, biologics therapy for psoriasis, UV-associated skin diseases, granulomatous diseases such as sarcoidosis and granuloma annulare, and collagen diseases such as systemic sclerosis. We conduct intensive research focusing on basic and clinical investigation of these disorders. Main research projects are, 1) investigation of the effects of UV on immunological reactions, carcinogenesis, and ageing, using specific mice with human-skin color and epidermal melanocytes which we developed (pat. No 4406696), 2) analysis of epithelioid cells and multinucleated giant cells which belong to monocytes/macrophages and are main immunologic cells in granulomas, 3) elucidation of the significant roles of CD14+CD16+ monocytes in granulomatous disorders and psoriasis, 4) investigation of the potential roles of TIM and natural lymphoid cells in the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis, and 5) elucidation of the pathogenic mechanisms of solar urticaria.
